Come learn some tips and techniques that make outdoor painting with acrylics a joy! We’ll start with an intro and demo, then you’ll set up and create your own plein air landscape painting with Nancy’s guidance and one-on-one help. During the last half hour or so we’ll gather to share our work and chat about the day’s experiences. Plan to bring all of your own equipment and acrylic painting supplies. A list of suggested supplies will be available soon. In a nutshell, you should be able to work mostly with stuff you already have, and maybe only need to buy a couple of new things to get the most out of the workshop. You’ll especially want to have a handful of tubes of Golden Open Acrylic. Just the primary colors and Titanium White would be a good start, or the Golden Open “Landscape” set. You’ll find more details in the suggested supplies list.

Nancy Roberts is an avid plein air painter who works mainly in acrylic. She exhibits her work in several galleries, participates in regional shows and plein air events, organizes paint-outs for the Contra Costa Plein Air group, presents demonstrations for art associations and teaches painting workshops. Her work has garnered many awards and is included in public and private collections across the country. You can view her work at

Cost is $60.00 for PAL, LAA and DAC members and $65.00 for non-members for the first 12 artists to register. Information and an Additional Materials List will be provided after registration.

Enroll in the workshop HERE and Pay by either PayPal or Check.

The workshop is open to artists 18 and up. Open to all Levels (some drawing experience is recommended). Class size minimum needed is 9 artists with a maximum of 12 artists total for this workshop.

Pleasanton Art League Workshop Update for 2022

PAL is pleased that the Firehouse Art Center of Pleasanton is open again after being closed for most of 2020 and part of 2021. We hope to schedule workshops in their upstairs studios soon. The PAL Workshop Committee hoped to bring back Watercolorist and Chinese painter Lian Quan Zhen to the Firehouse Art Center but Lian has cut back on all of his live workshops for 2022. Since we will not be able to see Lian live this year, we have attached information about his Zoom workshops.

We have also booked local Photographer Lisa Rigge to do a workshop on hand tinting black and white photos using her special pastel technique. Lisa recently presented background on tinted photos. This will be available on YouTube soon. More information will follow on both of these workshops.

Lian Quan Zhen, Watercolor Master and favorite Pleasanton workshops instructor for several years, held 13 online workshops in 2021 to the delight of watercolor artists around the country. Lian follows the same format that students have loved in his live workshops. His online workshops are small and interactive giving each student the chance to ask questions and get feedback while painting. Lian provides reference photos, does multiple demonstrations each day, records the demos for playback while students are painting, remains online and available and then offers critiques.

Students appreciate being able to paint from home with a day off in between workshop days to allow them to catch up, and sometimes even start a fresh painting. Lian uses an online gallery to let workshop participants share their finished paintings if they choose. Lian’s 2022 workshop schedule includes a variety of subjects. From now through March, they will be held on Thursdays and Saturdays, from 9:30 am West Coast Time to 1:30 pm. Recordings from each day are included in the workshop fee of $195. Also in 2022, Lian is offering some exciting one-day intensive classes; the specific focus will be on a specific skill development rather than completing a painting. The fee is $98 per class. For more information on Lian Quan Zhen’s classes, contact Lois Erhartic at
