2008 Scholarships

xTo promote interest in the arts for the next generation, the Pleasanton Art League (PAL) awards $1,000 dollars in scholarships each year.

Currently, art students are selected with the help of Mr. Bill Paskewitz, who is an art professor at Las Positas College in Livermore, CA. Student portfolios are submitted in late Spring, and from these portfolios, PAL selects 1-2 winners for the $1,000 PAL Scholarship. Las Positas art students should watch their class bulletin boards for scholarship information and deadlines.

The winner is invited and encouraged to show his/her work at the Pleasanton Art League's Annual Art Show, and attend the reception and awards ceremony where the scholarship award will be presented. The next reception and awards ceremony will take place at the PAL Annual Art Show in June 2009.

2008 Scholarship Winners

PAL would like to congratulate the 2008 scholarship winners: Kelsi Mannhalter and Julie Cuy are recipients of the PAL Scholarships Awards with an Honorable mention to Christine Goldenhar. All are Las Positas students. Presentations were made at the PAL show in June. The winning artwork was selected from images sent as JPEG attachments directly to the judges (Scholarship Chairperson, Beth Okurowski and Barbara Daggett). This submission method was introduced by Bill Paskowitz this year as a way of giving his students experience with digital submissions. Both the candidates and the judge learned from this new submission process. Elements such as file size, and viewing artwork that had been downsized to fit a laptop certainly came into play in the judging. The "design" of the art really had to stand up to being shrunk! Submitting artwork digitally was good practice for the students. Receiving digital images also makes it possible to create a presentation for showcasing all entries for the annual PAL art show. Normally, only the winners' artwork would be seen at the show.
