Plant Matter

John Beahm
Acrylics

After years as a graphic designer in the Santa Clara Valley, my discovery of a book on Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and soon to follow, painting class in 1998 was magical timing. San Jose City College instructors Joy and Mike Ellner led me to intersecting genres of Modern Art, the New York School, and Bay Area Figurative Art. Additionally, life forces correlated well to the bold colors and raw emotion of the Expressionist realm. These confluences became the catalyst for my absorption into painting.

Working from within, I push the paint, creating irregular reactions of line and form. I enjoy seeing where the paint takes me. I meld compositions from experiences or everyday observations. Often, I expand on shapes revealed in background waves of paint. I strive to convey a subject's spirit, while leaving room for viewer imagination.

I currently reside in Manteca, showing in town as well as surrounding regions.
