How Wanda Kemper Judges

portraitWhen asked how she judges an art show, Wanda (pictured at right) said, "I look for the work that holds my attention and has an element of confidence and sophistication that places it above other work. This is what is called "the wow factor." Often the work of art will catch my attention from across the room because of the way the artist has handled the light versus dark areas and color.

"After I take note of all the pieces that grab me, I ask myself the following questions about each work of art:

  • Is there a focal area?
  • Does it tell a story?
  • Did I get the feeling of movement and space?
  • If a landscape, is there a foreground, middle and background?
  • Is the composition harmonious?
  • How does the artist handle color?
  • Does it have pleasing proportions?

"All the art I've selected has elements that contribute to making a work of art outstanding. I gave the ones that have the most elements the highest honors.

TOP"Note: I believe you can break all the rules and have a masterpiece, but you should know the rules to break them successfully."
